Onion Farfalle Pasta

    2 tb oil
    1 1/2 lbs onions, thin sliced
    1/2 ts salt
    1/2 ts sugar
    1 ts dry basil
    1/2 ts dry thyme
    Fresh ground pepper
    1/2 c sater
    2 tb balsamic vinegar
    12 oz Farfalle (bow-tie) pasta
    Parmesan cheese

    Cook sliced onions in heated oil over high til onions begin to brown, about 10 minutes. Lower heat and add salt, sugar and spices. Cook 10 minutes, stirring often, til onions are caramel-colored. Add water and vinegar and cover. Simmer while pasta is cooking.

    Meanwhile bring 3 quarts of water to a boil. Cook pasta al dente. Drain well.

    Divide pasta equally in 4 heated bowls. Top with equal portions of caramelized onions and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, if desired.

    Serves 4.
