Walnut Torte with Meringue

(Two 8-inch layers)
A grand party dessert.
Sift together into a mixing bowl
1 cup sifted flour
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
In a cuisinart or blender blend
1/2 cup shortening
1/3 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
4 egg yolks
1/2 cup sugar
Blend about a minute, then pour into dry ingredients and mix well. Pour into greased, wax-paper lined grease pans and spread with Walnut Meringue.
Bake in slow oven, 300 degrees F., for 1 hour. Cool. Put together and frost with Chocolate Whip.
(Tops two 8-inch layers)
Beat until stiff with rotary egg beater
4 egg whites
1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar
Gradually add and beat until glossy
3/4 cup sugar
FOLD in 1 cup walnuts, chopped in blender (better do this before mixing cake to save washing container in the middle of things.)
(Very generous topping for 2 layers)
Combine, chill for an hour, then whip until stiff
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
1/3 cup cocoa
1/2 cup sugar
