Aunt Violet's Buttermilk Biscuits

    2 Cups self-rising Flour
    1/3 cup Shortening
    1/2 tsp Baking soda
    1 tsp Baking Powder
    1 cup Buttermilk
    3 tbsp melted butter

    Pre Heat Oven to 400 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Using a pastry cutter, fork, or hands and cut in the shortening into flour mixture.(Mixture should be the consitency of crumbs). Then add buttermilk, combine well. If dough is to dry, add more buttermilk a tbsp at a time. Note: Dough will never be to sticky.

    On a well floured surface turn dough out and pat it into a (1- 1 1/2 thick) square. (any shape will do) Using a biscuit cutter or top of glass, cut out the biscuits. Place on a baking sheet. Bake for 10 mins or till the biscuits are a golden brown on top. Remove from oven and brush the tops of the biscuits with the melted butter, serve immediately. Serve with Jelly, Jam, Gravy etc.

    Note: You may have to adjust cooking time depending upon your oven and where you live in the United States. Your biscuits should rise to almost double their height.
