Gratin Potatoes

    GRATIN POTATOES

    1 clove garlic, peeled and slightly crushed with the flat side of a knife
    3 pounds baking potatoes (about six large), peeled and sliced in
    one-eighth-inch-thick rounds
    6 to 8 ounces Swiss or Gruyere cheese, finely shredded
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 cup heavy whipping cream

    Heat oven to 350 degrees. Rub shallow two-quart baking dish (can use a
    9-by-13-inch pan) with garlic. Layer half the potatoes evenly over bottom of
    the
    dish. Sprinkle with half the cheese and salt; drizzle with half the cream.
    Repeat layers.
    Bake uncovered 1 1/2 hours or until potatoes are tender when pierced with a
    fork and the top is brown and crisp. (It has taken as little as an hour and
    15 minutes for them to be done)

    Yield: 10 servings.
