Tasty holiday recipes made with bourbon
Phyllis Steinberg

It's that holiday time of year when calories are out the window and fun is just around the corner. These recipes are decadently delicious. They are made with sugar, butter and bourbon.
The Book of Bourbon by Gary Regan and Mardee Haidin Regan has all sorts of wonderful stories about the history of Bourbon and other American whiskeys.
Kentucky is the major supplier of bourbon in the United States. Labrot & Graham near Lexington, KY is one of America's oldest operating Bourbon distilleries. This small picturesque distillery makes Woodford Reserve, a select premium whisky. It is one of the oldest distilling sites in Kentucky, and is the only distillery in the state using the pot still method. The distillery offers free tours showing visitors how bourbon is made and aged in oak barrels for two years before it is ready to be bottled.
On a recent visit to Lexington, I took the free tour of the distillery and enjoyed the sights, smells and sensations of the establishment. I will long remember the heady aromas of yeast and grain, the glimmer of copper tanks, and the cool quiet of the warehouse where row upon row of wooden barrels stretched into the darkness. At the end of the tour, there was a free tasting of the bourbon, which had a smooth, woodsy flavor.
They also have a wonderful gift shop with lots of interesting goodies like Bourbon filled chocolate candies and bourbon bread mixes.
Being a foodie, I immediately asked for bourbon recipes and they happily gave me a few of their best. I added a few of my personal favorites, Southern-Style Spiked Chocolate Pecan Pie and Bourbon-Brown Sugar Shortbread. They are perfect for the holiday season. Most of them are easy to prepare, too! Enjoy these recipes, but don't count calories!
